The collapse of history

I have noticed a trend in our society towards using cherry picked “facts” as bats to bludgeon people with.

Social media has a lot to answer for.

We (I) have become really reactive.

Jumping to conclusions about people.

Construing things through the most negative possible lens.

I have been guilty of this too.

Our society is complex.

History is complex.

Looking at things through any particular lens might be valuable to add to the sum of human knowledge - but isn’t an end in itself.

If we aren’t using the lens consciously as a tool then it is an impediment to sight.

The thing that gets me is that there's a political agenda from both the left and the right that tells us everyone is on either side of the extreme. If someone says they support the troops people are to quick to conclude that that person is also a gun toting conservative who hates gays, transgender people, women, blacks, and more. If someone says they support debt relief for students in college, theyre labelled as a communist/fascist that wants total government control over every fascet of life. It is absurd. It isnt their faults either; quite the contrary: The agendas by the right and left and the media have been feeding this to the average citizen on the daily. What's worse? People actually buy it. They dont think for themselves. They dont realize that just because they disagree with abortion they have to align all their moral and economic and social values with the extreme right. Same goes for vice versa (the left).
It's a crying shame because people dont realize they can think for themselves. And all it does is divide us and be quick to label others (just as youre speaking about).
Critical thinking is so important. So so important. People need to wake up and realize this.
I dont have all the answers. Im so far from it. But i at least see the absurdities in it, and i refuse to see someone as an enemy simply because they disagree with me. And i refuse to immediately label them as something theyre most likely not. People are extremely diverse and varied. We need to be better.

Your words are wise and well spoken. We need to listen to them
