Yeah i remember hearing a guy talk about how the flat earth was just kind of a thought experiment/exercise in playing devils advocate seeing what he and his buddies could successfully argue...and then people who weren't in on the joke started taking it seriously and here we are.
@Convivial That's very likely so. A lot of legends and fables may well have started from unusual natural events or objects the contemporary observers genuinely could not explain.
