Why do people have beliefs that are clearly ridiculous?

I ask because I just don't understand this; I'm genuinely confused. For example, the belief that many now apparently have that the Earth is flat! Seriously? Are these people just trolling us? Is this all some big joke that I'm not aware of?
My sister often watches this YouTube channel, and I have to say it is full of batshit crazy nonsense of the highest calibre!

or that we actually live in some sort of computer driven simulation or Matrix

However that could explain part of the paranormal
GeniUs · 56-60, M
@AllycatAD That would explain everything, from where did my keys go - through ghosts, aliens, multiverse - up to god.
Pambie · 22-25, F
@GeniUs It explains nothing, because then you have to provide an explanation for how or why we're in a reality that's fake.
GeniUs · 56-60, M
@Pambie why do people play computer games or go on message forums where everybody they meet could be fake - it's the same.
Pambie · 22-25, F
@GeniUs It's not the same at all. The characters in, for example, a computer game aren't real.

@AllycatAD @Pambie Well smarter people than us give it a possibility, Nathan de Grasse Tyson, Prof Brian Cox, Elon Musk, all say it's likely.
Pambie · 22-25, F
@GeniUs Elon Musk? Oh dear. And no, just because you believe there are people you can name who accept this nonsensical idea who are, in your opinion, "smarter people than us", that doesn't mean they're correct.
And it's NEIL deGrasse Tyson.
GeniUs · 56-60, M
@Pambie You may not think Musk is a smart guy but he is and that says a lot about you. I don't like him as I assume you do not but that does not make him any less intelligent.
just because you believe there are people you can name who accept this nonsensical idea
No I know there are people who acknowledge this idea, since we're picking up small inconsistencies in each others arguments.
in your opinion, "smarter people than us"
Unless you have a phenomenal intelligence which you being on this forum proves otherwise yes they are smarter than us.
that doesn't mean they're correct
They are correct and there is no disputing (unless you have an understanding issue)
smarter people than us give it a possibility
, does not force the issue one way or the other, there is no way that statement can be wrong.
I didn't want to go down this road of destroying your argument but since you are so sure of yourself and aggressively so, it needed doing.
*Thank you for correcting Neil's name it was the only thing you got right.

Oh for goodness' sake, the guy is a fraud, a conman! He's not an engineer, scientist or inventor. He has created precisely nothing original; his employees do all the hard work, and he takes the credit for it. Just like when he brags that he founded 'PayPal' (he didn't) or founded 'Tesla' (he didn't), or when he cheats at - of all things - computer games!
The guy is a JOKE!

Well yes, I dispute their claims. Why shouldn't I? If what someone claims to be correct is at best highly dubious, then it's our duty to question it. To do otherwise would be to engage in thoughtlessness to a degree that is almost criminal.

I didn't want to go down this road of destroying your argument but since you are so sure of yourself and aggressively so, it needed doing.

Oh dear. The delusion is strong with this one Luke. "Destroy" my arguments? Puhleese, don't make me laugh. You've "destroyed" precisely nothing here.
I see you are just yet another Musk fanboy who can't accept that people like him aren't what they claim to be, and would rather believe their lies, because that makes you feel happy or complete or God-knows-what.
GeniUs · 56-60, M
@Pambie Honestly kid you just keep getting worse and worse I was going to itemise your failings again but you didn't get it the first time around, so maybe you just go and smell the roses or something instead.
Pambie · 22-25, F
@GeniUs Oh for goodness' sake! WHAT "failings"?
Yeah, sure, you were "going to". LOL 😂
Admit it; you've got nothing!
GeniUs · 56-60, M
@Pambie OK
All the people I quoted said this world could be a simulation - you're acting as if they say it is and demand we all acknowledge. As I said there's no way the original statement can be wrong, either it is or it isn't.
I already pointed out I'm not a fan of Musk he's put his mind to making money that's what entrepreneur's do, it doesn't make him any less clever.
Now, you can continue to shout about things you think I said using emojis instead of a coherent argument but you're continuing to fail.
Pambie · 22-25, F
@GeniUs Your original comment was:

That would explain everything, from where did my keys go - through ghosts, aliens, multiverse - up to god.

My response was that the idea didn't explain anything at all, and for the reasons I gave, so there is no "could" about this; it's not possible. At all.
Up to God? If anything, our reality being a "simulation" would make God the 'Grand Programmer', and wouldn't explain God, but would give Him something to do, something to create.

But it would explain everything. Your argument is that it doesn't exist which I hadn't got round to challenging at that point but if this were a simulation anything could happen, anything.
And yes 'god' would be the programmer; 'The Why Files' does an excellent video on this and he finishes off with that statement and also a twist but you'll have to watch it to find that out.
Pambie · 22-25, F
@GeniUs I've probably already seen that video, because I used to watch 'The Why Files' a lot. It's still a good channel, in spite of their embrace of some rather batty ideas lately.
