New Jersey Juvenile Arrested After Six Injured in Suspected Acid Throwing Attack

A late Monday evening in Jersey City’s Greenville neighborhood escalated into a violent and unusual attack that left six people injured after what police are investigating as a targeted acid assault involving a corrosive chemical believed to be sulfuric acid.

The incident, which included three teenage victims, unfolded on Wilkinson Avenue near Ocean Avenue and has since drawn an active multi-agency investigation.

Authorities say the violence may not have been spontaneous.

Preliminary findings suggest the attack could be linked to a dispute involving a larger group of people earlier in the day, setting off a chain of events that culminated in the confrontation on the street.

At the time of the incident, victims were gathered outside when suspects traveling on a moped or vehicle allegedly passed by and threw a liquid substance that immediately caused burning injuries upon contact, NBC New York reported.

The impact on victims was immediate and severe.

A 21-year-old woman sustained second-degree burns to her face and scalp and was transported to Saint Barnabas Burn Unit for specialized treatment.

The remaining victims, including three teenagers, suffered varying degrees of skin burns and chemical exposure.

Officials have said all six individuals were hospitalized and are expected to recover, though the physical and psychological effects of chemical burns can be long-lasting, according to CBS News.

Police have arrested a juvenile in connection with the attack, though charges have not yet been finalized.

A second suspect believed to be involved has not been identified, and investigators continue to review surveillance footage and witness statements. Authorities have also not ruled out additional arrests as the investigation develops.
