The Russians have no choice. Their conventional military capability is hardly any better than Europe's, as their invasion of Ukraine has amply proved.

If Russia wanted to make a move on Germany, it would have to go through NATO countries in eastern Europe, immediately bringing in all NATO members, including the UK and US. Russia would have no chance.

Russia doesn't have enough hypersonic missiles armed with conventional bombs to take out a large city in an hour. And an attempted attack like that on a NATO member would bring in the US immediately.

Putin would be glad to have a pax Mongolica, as long as he could play the role of the Great Khan.

I don't think he would want someone as dangerous as Stalin to be head of the orthodox church, however.
