Evan Gershkovich, others freed by Russia in landmark prisoner swap

The United States, Russia, Germany and four other countries swapped at least two dozen people Thursday in the largest prisoner exchange since the height of the Cold War. Those released included American journalist Evan Gershkovich, former Marine Paul Whelan, Russian dissidents and others from the United States, Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Norway, Russia and Belarus.

The exchange caps months of painstaking diplomacy involving negotiations at the highest levels of multiple governments. “The deal that secured their freedom was a feat of diplomacy,” said President Biden in a statement. Russia received eight prisoners Thursday, and released 16, many of whom were unjustly accused or handed heavy sentences for minor offenses.

President Biden, speaking from the White House, said negotiations to free the prisoners came “with tough calls and there never any guarantees.”

“There’s nothing that matters more to me,” he said. “I’m protecting Americans at home and abroad, and so we’ll continue to work for the release of all wrongfully detained Americans around the world.”

The former hostages landed in the capital of Turkey, where the CIA director had been coordinating last minute details.

The dementia patient pulled off a deal, involving several countries, most hostile to each other. The clincher came as part of a call President Biden made to the official of Slovenia, where a couple of Russian spies were held, one hour before he announced he was pulling out of the Presidential race.

See, that's the type of thing that makes sense. Joe no longer has to worry about reelection, so he's taking care of stuff he should have been worrying about instead.

Now let's see him pass some legislation reining in the unlimited power currently enjoyed by the Supreme Court.

@LordShadowfire you sure know how to confuse the reader, why the first sentence? He wasn't worried about re-election with his previous swap! I don't think HE can pass anything alone, particularly related to SCOTUS!

@samueltyler2 Ever heard of an executive order? Donald Trump used to pass them all the time, and there would talk of impeaching him for it, but now according to the Supreme Court, the president can't be prosecuted for anything that is considered an official act as president. So yeah.

@LordShadowfire do you really think he could pass an executive office to fix the court? You know FDR tried that. It would require at least congressional legislation. The house is still republican. There might be a chance that presidential immunity can get some legislation, but packing SCOTUS, very unlikely.

@samueltyler2 I'm not talking about necessarily packing SCOTUS, although I want to see him do that. I'm talking about passing an executive order implementing an enforceable code of ethics, violations of which would be impeachable.

@LordShadowfire I don't think it can be done that way. They have avoided it for so long, it will require legislation, if not a constitutional amendment. I want to see two sitting justices charged with graft/corruption.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@samueltyler2 I can think of six I'd like to see removed on suspicion of corruption myself. But I'll settle for two.

You could be right. I don't know what the limit is on how far an executive order can go. I saw Trump push the limits of those damn things during his term of office, so I guess I just figured we were treating them like magic genie wishes.

@LordShadowfire Biden could do something we might think as criminal now that he has immunity!
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@samueltyler2 I still wish he would launch a drone strike on Mar-A-Lago, but it's looking like that ain't gonna happen.

@LordShadowfire put pressure on the tax people there to raise the taxes to meet his estimation of its value! Raise the water charges on water for his golf course, there may be that sort of pressures.
@samueltyler2 That fact that he hasn’t and won’t is just one of the innumerable ways he is a better human being, President, and role model for our youth than lying CONVICTED FELON tRUMP!
