Is Google supposed to be regulated like a public utility? Like, legally?

If rules applied to the giants who control us and who control our laws, would Google be public utility we've failed to regulate?

Google today is actually no different to Google of 20 years ago. It’s right up there with Facebook when it comes to grabbing ALL of your personal user data and selling it to the highest bidder. Both companies were founded on this principle.

Currently Facebook is being the hardest hit in terms of impacted revenue from smartphone users not allowing apps to track their app usage patterns across various user platforms. Google is also being affected. When companies revenue is impacted that also impacts a companies share price. When a share price drops investors usually bail quickly.

Government regulation is a tricky animal. It sounds good when it us announced but to make it “actually” work is a while different beast usually because it comes with so many loopholes that make it unworkable and easy to work around.

@justanothername I disagree. 20 years ago, Google was useful. It allowed me to exclude research results I didn't want and narrow my search down to what I was actually looking for.

@LordShadowfire Google is still useful but it’s not the only search engine in town.

Google has always been evil we just know more about the extent of that evil now than we did 20 years ago.

No it's an arm of the state

@scrood Google is nothing to do with the government. It is a 100% private company founded by two math geniuses who saw an opening in the burgeoning internet market for paid searches. They quickly capitalized on the concept of giving users who paid more money more preference on having their searches show up more often in a users search preferences.

@justanothername That's what they want you to think

@scrood no one in the govt has the brains to create a company like Google but plenty of people in the private sector do. That’s how Google got created. Two maths brainiacs at Stanford had an idea…
You are just not old enough to know the history of Google.

I don't know, but something needs to be done about it. The Google of today is terrible compared to the Google of 20 years ago, and it's still somehow better than the other search engines out there.
