Maybe a Texan can explain

It took 40 minutes or more to breach the school and take down the shooter. And when it was done, it was done by a tactical squad from the U.S. Border Patrol -- we are talking about 50+ miles from the border -- that the Texas Governor claims is ineffectual and not doing their job, while Uvalde residents complained their local law enforcement stood around outside doing nothing.

Have y'all asked Gov. Abbott to define effectual without using political labels?

other countries cops have to go to a police school for 2-3 years... here every idiot can become a cop after 3 month of training...

cops in the usa are propably the shittiest policeforce in the world.. full of cowards and they all cover each others asses

@Milkshake BOOM BABY!!!!!!!! hella call

@Milkshake You may want to check your resources, but a quick check says that police training programs in Texas last more like 12 months +

Also, training programs in Europe tend to be far longer than in the US, in general; in part because occupations in Europe are in general life long careers while in the US we job-hop and are employed as needed, to be laid of when not needed.

@Milkshake You might want to do some research there. Because over 90% of the Police Agencies here in the USA require either a Minimum of a 2 year Criminal Justice degree or 4 years of Military Law Enforcement Training. About 40% require a 4 year degree. That's just to apply. After you get selected, you must attend at least a 3 to 6 month training program. Plus you have to go thru training at least once every year for advanced training.

@dakotaviper a degree isn't experience and training.
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@Milkshake One of the problems is that "KKK" companies do most of the police training.

U.S. police trainers with far-right ties are teaching hundreds of cops

@MethDozer you're correct there. That's why I said that you need the degree or military training just to apply.
MethDozer · M
@dakotaviper Police aren't military and they shouldn't be.
Reguardless police training and perfomrance models are pretty crappy in here in the US. That isn't a dif at cops and police really, they are being failed to by it. Just my two cents, it's not doing good for the people on either side of the badge really.

@MethDozer @Diotrephes Part of the problem is the military occupation mentality coupled with the give-away of surplus military equipment to police departments as part of the "peace dividend" when we pretended the Cold War had ended. The police didn't need armored vehicles or surveillance drones to do a better job -- they needed to get out of their patrol cars, back into community policing building bridges with those they presumably are supposed to serve and protect, and training in how to defuse situations from worsening rather than rolling out the heavy artillery as the first response to everything.

@dancingtongue As a kid I was taught 'A policeman is your friend'. That was largely true, but that was a long, long time ago. Also I was white & looked 'middle class'.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@Really And I bet the policeman was the neighborhood cop, whether he still walked the beat or not. He interacted with the community on a regular basis, not just when there was trouble to respond to.

@dancingtongue The policeman, the mailman and the milkman (and his friendly horse!)

@Really I hear the chorus "those were the days" swelling in the background. 😏

@MethDozer You know, the great thing about that show at a time when the country was just about as divided and polarized was that both sides could watch it and laugh at it. My father loved the show because "Archie tells it like it is" and, laughed at all the put downs of his "little girl" and Meathead. I could laugh at Archie's outlandish statements, but had to admit, in truth, some of Meathead's pronouncements were just as outlandish as Archie's. And everyone could empathize with poor Edith, caught in the middle, and just trying to muddle through, but unknowingly usually stumbled on the most practical solution. In today's climate, even in the humor shows, there would be no room for Edith. Everything is 100% one pole or the other.

@Milkshake Did you know that cops are supposed to meet the UN standard?
