Christmas extended

My 6 year old niece was devastated this week when her daddy unfairly took advantage of her return to school to take down their Christmas tree 馃槬

Our tree is still up (albeit with all decorations but the lights removed). It is a beautiful tree that provides illumination and cheer during one of the dreariest months of the year for just a few pence a day. I intend it to remain in place until at least February.

My little niece is coming to lunch today as a consolation. My daughter got up specially early this morning to bake some mincepies 馃巹

Our tradition has always been to live the 12 days of Christmas, and close the season on the 13th day of Christmas. The kids knew the song by the time they were 3 or 4. We also didn't start Christmas prep until after one of our kidss' birthday, which was Dec 20th. A few years we got free Christmas trees on December 23 or 24th, thanks to tree sellers anxious to clear their tree lot.

By the end of the 12th day the leftovers were all history, no more fruit cake, no more late Christmas cards, time to formally put the Christmas stuff away.

This is just how we did it, not a suggestion to anyone else. Partly that we didn't want to overlap a birthday celebration with Christmas. It became a year to year tradition, except for a bunch of years after that child died and we were able to defuse or distract from our sadness with Christmas at Grandparents or relatives. After a half dozen+ years of Christmas away from home we slowly resumed the old tradition.

@Heartlander I'm sorry for your loss. Winter is a sad time for me too and I use colour and light to distract my mind and lift my spirits.

You do know it should stay up all year if it鈥檚 not taken down before 12th night or it brings bad luck keep it up saves a job next December

The pies & your daughter will go a long towards cheering up your niece. But honestly, I would have done the same as her dad. Makes it more special when it's a fixed season.

@ineedadrink It's just the tree she was attached, not the presents or anything else . . I think she wanted it to remain until the Easter Bunny showed up.

Back in the 70's we had a neighbor that had a live tree planted in their indoor central courtyard, they would decorate it as a holiday tree each different holiday, not just as an xmas tree, for their kids.
