I grew up listening to them in summertime. I hear they visit every 15 years, but around here it's really only 3 years or so.

@PatKirby We have a type of cicada that is here every summer. There are apparently different types of cicadas.

@NativePortlander1970 I have no idea. Sometimes birds change where they nest. The mockingbirds will do this. A couple of years we had a lot of mockingbirds in the neighborhood. I would listen to the males that were guarding the neighborhood on the rooftops of homes singing and see them flying up and landing back down. There aren’t many around here now. Probably in part to a cat catching an adult. The cats also catch sparrows and not many of them come around here either, used to be dozens and dozens of them in trees all around here. I found the mockingbird feathers behind a hedge by my deck in April. And have seen sparrow feathers on one of the feral cats here. I don’t know why the kites would not come back here to the neighborhood this year.
