I'm new at gardening 🌱

Last spring I tried making this little patch of grass outside our bulding ready for planting, but didn't quite succeed. I now thought of digging up some of the dirt, place cardboard and then put new dirt on top. I think that might prevent most weed from regrowing. What do you think? 🌻

They do say that’s the best way to have a “no dig garden”

You should do it 😊

@GLITTER I never heard the expression before, what's the idea? This is just a patch of grass next to the street, so I think I will need to help it out a little.

@Entheesa so the more you turn over soil the more of the nutrients you lose, plus more chance for weed seeds to get into the turned soil and sprout into weeds. So the Idea is to keep the soil as settled as possible and to avoid digging it as much as possible. It also helps disturbing all the little bugs that are doing their important work in the soil..

So the cardboard on the top will suppress the weeds that are already there. You do need to give it a good dig out prior to doing this, just to remove any last bits. Then your soil on top is what you plant into.

You may want to leave some gaps in the cardboard if your planning on planting any shrubs or pre potted plants. But apart from that you should just be able to sow your seeds direct on the new top soil.

If you get self seeding plants/ perennials you probably wont Need to replant the patch every year and hopefully it should bloom year after year. You may just need to take out small weeds, but you can do that localised to the area you are we’d in without moving too much of the other soil.

If you need any help I love gardening I can give you some further advice

@GLITTER I see! Thank you so much, I keep being pleasently surprised how helpful people on SW are with all kinds of things. I do have one more question, which is whether it's best for all plants to start them inside? Or perhaps some don't even like that?

@Entheesa I’ve tried both and both work out. It’s quite late to do them indoors if you’re in the uk so maybe just plant straight in and see how you get on. Those butterfly and bee boxes of mixed seed are really affective and you get a ton of variety and they germinate and sprout really well 😊
