These insects have another interesting property in that they can produce a squeaking sound when disturbed. This sound is produced by rubbing parts of their abdominal segments together. The sound along with its bright colors combine to send one message - leave me alone. 🤔
@Nightwings This is a red velvet ant. Actually a wingless wasp with a potent sting. I spotted one a few years ago and had the good sense not to touch it. Bright colors in nature are often a danger warning!
@GerOttman Oh! I follow a popular ant channel online and never heard any mention of this one – makes sense since it's a wasp haha. It may be venemous, but it's certainly beautiful. (=
