License registration is like $35 in the VA capital cheaper in other spots here. The only reason the capital is that high is because they make the city residents pay a highway fee.
But we also have annual property taxes on our cars.

@4meAndyou Pretty much, yes — same core idea (annual value-based tax on your car), but different legal label and collection rules.

Virginia: Personal property tax
Other states (like MA): Excise tax

The name difference mostly comes from how the state’s tax code categorizes it, but either way, it’s the government charging you yearly for owning the vehicle.
