Once and only once when I lived in NW Washington. It was on a cold, clear, and crisp evening just at or a few minutes after sundown (twilight) and after a heavy snowfall.
The colors that night were predominately purple and it made the snow covering the trees, homes, grounds and roads shimmer in a light purple color.
One of the most beautiful sights I've ever seen... I'd call it a spiritual experience.

Yes. When I lived in the northern New Hampshire mountains ot was common to see them during the winter. I have a very vivid memory of my friends and I taking the sleds out one frigid evening, shutting off the engines, and just sitting there marveling at the beauty of the aurora borealis. I miss that

Yes, a number of times including right in the city. I usually do not see the colours though (apparently that is the case for many people) so it is the motion, shapes, and energy that captivate me.

Very faintly. Even although I m quite far south in Scotland, they have been pretty strong in recent times and we can see a green glow in the sky to the north east of us. I live pretty high, so this makes it easier to catch them.
