Gentle reminder that "save the bees" campaigns that are actually promotions for beekeeping are damaging to native pollinators

Honeybees do not need to be supported. They're an imported species that kills and pushes out native pollinators, which are the ones in decline. Honeybees also are worse at pollinating than native species. Plant native flowers and provide shelter for your local pollinators if you really want to help. Carpenter bees, sweat bees, bumble bees, and even wasps are the ones who need help 🐝

I place mason bee houses near my fruit and berries to shelter mason bees to help with pollination, and encourage a ground bee colony near my garden. They do a great job and I get tons of blueberries in particular.

@Doomflower Arthropods are the ones who keep mostly surviving mass extinction events. Prioritizing their health and populations seems like a good idea since we're pretty much fucked when shit starts to go down

thanks for the info. good to know

Thing is, carpenter bees eat my house. I don't know what sweat bees are, so I'll give them a pass. Bumblebees are big and scary and I don't like them. And do not get me started on wasps.
