I don't like it when people say Americans "don't want to do" farm jobs.

Americans will do any job. Americans will clean fatbergs out of blackwater sewage if you pay them right and give them livable hours and workplace protections. What Americans don't want is to break their backs for like $2 an hour and no benefits.

This. At my current job people comment that I don't smile enough. Why would I? Is it the minimum wage you pay me when I'm doing three people's jobs? That you always forget my lunch break? That I physically hurt and people treat me like crap but I should be happy to be hungry and one bad day away from homelessness because you can't find anyone else to work for you?

Generally they have a Mexican for that type of work.
A part of the problem with ag is that American farmers are competing with places like China and India that pay pennies. Big corporations will stop buying American if they can get it cheaper elsewhere.
@AthrillatheHunt are you familiar with plant stages?
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
@Nadie like seed , seedling , etc..?
@AthrillatheHunt no. We're talking different growing methods.

Em, so what do you suggest?
BlueVeins · 26-30
@samueltyler2 How about give them a pathway to citizenship so they can have the same worker protections as the rest of us and be regular Americans.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@BlueVeins that might be a start.
"They" say that about the local population in England, Holland, France and Spain, Italy and Canada. We just do not want these jobs! And therefore, they get to hire people they can easily abuse.
It's because there is satisfaction in what is done instead, corporations hate people to know where their food comes from, it's not cheaper, it's better for the ownership.

I thought the whole racism thing was ultimately about stopping slavery...what happened to that where'd it all go wrong?
BlueVeins · 26-30
@FloorGenAdm Racism was never about stopping slavery. They just did the populist posturing to win over swing voters who don't know any better while running cover for the capital class.
This is wildly applicable for everyone, in every country. Rase the damn wages!
FloorGenAdm · 51-55, M
@greensnacks But won't they jack up the prices on everything if they raise the wages?
@FloorGenAdm aren't they jacked up now already ? I'm not an economist, but I know if the top is getting richer and we are getting starved more and more something is off. And it's been happening for years.
BlueVeins · 26-30
@FloorGenAdm A little yeah. If something requires work to make, then it costs money to buy. Seems reasonable to me, we all gotta get paid. Maybe if food was priced appropriately, we'd waste less of it on cattle feed and whatnot.

if it wasnt for farm work most americans would not have survived
