It's such a bad faith argument. They don't give a shit about history because if they did they'd know full well why Columbus shouldn't have fucking statues in his honour.
Statues aren't history. Like what was more historic, the statue of Saddam Hussein or the scene of a crowd tearing it down?
Statues are symbols, and traditionalism is based around symbols and mythology. Changing Columbus from 'good guy' to 'bad guy' is treated like an attack on the self, but because they can't articulate that, we get these idiotic history arguments.

@StrawberryMilkshake Yeah I get that. Statues are politically charged symbols so always run that risk. Thay said I hear about so much destruction of ancient statues and religious structures for the same reason and it's heartbreaking to know that's gone.

For example all the Confederate statues people were tearing down last year were from the 1920s.
They were deliberately erected to terrify black people and make them feel unsafe.
Leaving those up to learn a lesson ignores the fact these symbols exist for a reason.
It's like how some asshat flew a Nazi flag in my small town. I was outraged. My black friend was terrified. She's the one who should decide what happens, not me.

@Robynthebeautiful aside from the fact that technically Native Americans first discovered the Americas and settled via the Bering land bridge, if we mean non indigenous people, Leif Ericson predated Columbus by hundreds of years.

This is my final thought , I grew up knowing that in history there were people that acted in bad ways for honor . I learned why these things happen and I just moved on because it happened. Now in 2021 people want to make a fuss about a period of time that happened already . I was not there I will not condome them .

He had to prove to men that their was more ocean , belived that the earth was flat , he was right and they were wrong . Even though he did not sail to North America he found South America . It was his faith and dermnation that allowed to do what he did . Those that doubt him were the wealthly and the leaders of the Catholic church .

@Spoiledbrat it’s called research. You get given a context and if you have a shred of critical thought you’ll go and research it. That’s how degrees work.
For the record it was Amerigo Vespucci who discovered America, and made it known to Europe, it was Colombus who went and exploited it in the name of Christianity. Hence why he was more famous.

A lot of people don't have degrees and many degrees require one history class that may not cover that part of American history. Further there are people who aren't curious or don't have a reason to not trust what they were taught. That's just people being people. @whoami1993
