What is "The Boss" trying to do here?

I just came across Bruce Springsteen's new song, "Night Shift" on YouTube. A cover song originally done by The Commodores back in 1985.

What do you think?

What is he trying to do?

It's not what we're used to from "The Boss," is it still good?

Should older artists just age out gracefully?

Is he doing this because he's "The Boss" and he can, because he's no longer bound by pop culture or bound by record executive's decisions?

This post is inspired by @Zonuss with his smooth style. I hope I did you justice Zonuss.😅

He's doing what he's always done and loves to do...make and interpret music

@starmitzy

Yes, he's still a great artist

@calicuz He's all right.
I think his older voice gives some emotion to the song. And you can tell he's really into it. It's quite peaceful. I take it as a song about friendship between artists, so it's quite fitting.

For whoever thinks that he's lost his relevance, go to one of his shows. They are packed, he does 4 hours straight and everyone in the house is rocking.

I think it’s still good.....not as good as the original, but most covers aren’t. Still, I like his interpretation.

@DragonFruit

Yes, few covers are as good as the original

I love this original song. Hes probably singing it because he likes it. I wouldn't choose this over the original though.
Wasn't terrible. But some songs will always fall flat compared to the original

@Bexsy

Yes, it's not an easy song to sing
Reaverwolf · M
As far as covers go, it is not too bad but lacks the emotional depth of the original
calicuz · 51-55, M
@Reaverwolf

Yes, that's exactly what it's missing.

It's Bruce ,hes not going to totally ruin a song but its not classic Springsteen...I miss Clarence,man
calicuz · 51-55, M
@bookerdana

Yes, Clarence was a big part of that classic sound

@calicuz Also rock stars/artists lose that magic creativity they have when younger.....Big Macca tours but his new song writing?????
calicuz · 51-55, M
@bookerdana

I totally agree with you.
HannahSky · F
I don't really like it but he should do more covers if he wants.
calicuz · 51-55, M
@HannahSky

Yeah, I give him an A for effort, but the song lacked in the soul department.
HannahSky · F
@calicuz I have to agree but he's having fun with it, I guess lol
calicuz · 51-55, M
@HannahSky

I agree, he is trying.
nedkelly · 61-69, M
Sadly, he is not relevant anymore and is trying to reinvent himself
calicuz · 51-55, M
@nedkelly

That's what I was thinking. Trying to reinvent himself.
Lilymoon · F
I like it 💙
calicuz · 51-55, M
@Lilymoon

I thought it was lacking and needed a little more soul. It isn't an easy song to sing.
Lilymoon · F
@calicuz well he did a version in his own Bruce way I guess.... I thought it was good. 🤷‍♀️
calicuz · 51-55, M
@Lilymoon

That's true, he did it the Bruce way.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
Not bad, but I prefer the Commodores.

A true artist evolves.
It's not always about relevancy.
He is free to express his talent as he desires. Thank you. 🙂

@Zonuss

Yes, I agree. 👍

I heard this for the first time yesterday on XM27. I like it. It is different from his usual but he does it well.

I was never a big Bruce fan, although loved the River when I was a kid, and a few from the early days. I like this and Bruce always had a cheesy part of him. His ambition demanded it.
calicuz · 51-55, M
@Human1000

I too like the 80s material
Zonuss · 41-45, M
This video shows you how diverse
and abstract a true artist can be. I think Springsteen is showing us right here that he is more than just an 80s rock guy. And that he can evolve and cross over into a different territory without losing his identity in the process.
He did very well in this classic remake song. It's catchy and upbeat. He is a legend . ☺️
calicuz · 51-55, M
@Zonuss

Yes, he is a legend.
