What is "The Boss" trying to do here?

I just came across Bruce Springsteen's new song, "Night Shift" on YouTube. A cover song originally done by The Commodores back in 1985.

What do you think?

What is he trying to do?

It's not what we're used to from "The Boss," is it still good?

Should older artists just age out gracefully?

Is he doing this because he's "The Boss" and he can, because he's no longer bound by pop culture or bound by record executive's decisions?

This post is inspired by @Zonuss with his smooth style. I hope I did you justice Zonuss.馃槄
