I don't know how far back you mean, nor in what genre, but if you mean what can broadly be in the "Pop" basket...
Firstly, most of us tend to cling to the pop music of our teens and our experiences of and around it then.
Our parents and grandparents did the same: my generation's parents would have wanted the American, Big Band and crooning styles.
Secondly, although the technical ability of the performers was as variable then as it is now (your illustartive track is frankly dire!), there was far more imagination and variety in their material; and most of the music was written and performed on real instruments by the named artistes. The decline in that came with the rise of sampling, drum-machines and general computer-ese by which ephemeral dance-tracks could be slung together without knowing a crotchet from croquet.

@FreddieUK Perhaps the "rasher of bacon" is a nod to Madonna and that "dress"...
I tried that video with its curiously old-fashioned image. The singing is awful and the displayed words (I nearly typed "lyrics") barely literate; but I think the Punk phase was the start of taking pride in being as musically unskilled as possible.
Previously, most pop performers were hardly of future Proms standard, but at least they tried; and some had been properly taught to at least a basic level. Further, many of them also sought originality, and even had hits by it, but originality and ability are now seen as grave sins, perhaps by the controlling industry.

Thankyou for the correction.
I would not know one of them from the other either in appearance or songs (mass-produced supermarket stuff, from hearing the odd one by one or the other woman) but I do recall the photographs of the bizarre attire.
I don't know why she wore it. Publicity, I suppose.
