Sting, "Russians" (1985)

[media=https://youtu.be/wHylQRVN2Qs]
I remember the world and the Cold War atmosphere when this song first came out and how profound these lyrics were back then.
It’s still a powerful song, indicative of its time, and in many ways even more relevant—but now it seems just a bit naive. Do the Russians "love their children (too)" ?
For that matter, do the Americans ? 😳

Yes, still a powerful song, as you said.

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Sting recorded an acoustic version of the song and made the following statement:

“I’ve only rarely sung this song in the many years since it was written, because I never thought it would be relevant again. But, in the light of one man’s bloody and woefully misguided decision to invade a peaceful, unthreatening neighbor, the song is, once again, a plea for our common humanity. For the brave Ukrainians fighting against this brutal tyranny and also the many Russians who are protesting this outrage despite the threat of arrest and imprisonment - We, all of us, love our children. Stop the war.”

The lyrics are just as profound and powerful now, to me anyway. There are, of course, the same kind of threats from those who care more about revenge and or power...than their or
anyone's children. 😓
Beautiful song … it really was a wonderful surprise ( kind of a shock) when I first heard it … 🌸🌸

Great song. That whole first solo album was brilliant.
@OldBrit Yes. It remains one of his very best.

"There is no monopoly of common sense on either side of the political fence."

Don't we know it, Stingo, don't we know it.
@uncalled4 "We share the same biology—regardless of ideology…"

It should really be that simple. 😞

@bijouxbroussard I always liked that line. People accuse him of being didactic and condescending, but he's spot on here.

Thank you for Best Comment.
@Rutterman I was not familiar with his current thoughts.

No idea on that last question. Everyone seems so hateful now.
