Modern v "Old School" singing in opera

I've been going through some videos on the subject. TRying to hear the differences. After a few goes, I think I am beginning to tell the differences. Here is one example....

I am a relative newbie to opera. My gf is a real fan. So if I can ask for constructive criticism, why you like or dislike.... 🙂
It’s an interesting video, and in some cases there were simply more skillful singers. But it’s hard to compare sopranos to contraltos, a recording versus a live performance, with variations in acoustics. And it’s also preference. A couple of the performances the videographer thought were better weren’t, really—the singers were just better known.
@bijouxbroussard I see what you mean. I think the point he was trying to make was the difference in how they performed a role. 🙂
@HoraceGreenley the younger pavarotti was special. Check out youtube videos of his from the 1960s.

Simce when is Mariah Carey opera?
@MethDozer Ask the person who compiled the video. I wouldn't have thought so, either, but I think the point is that pople love powerful singing, no matter what type o music it is, rather than "singers" mumbling through....
