On My Own - Les Mis

My all time favorite musical is Les Miserables. The music, the stories, the heartbreak, the stage set - it’s all so good (and yes, I cry through most of it.)

Victor Hugo wrote an incredible novel, and I think the musical does it justice.

Les Misérables is an epic story of love, sacrifice, injustice, redemption, and the quiet resilience of the human spirit, following people searching for grace and connection in a world marked by poverty, heartbreak, and revolution.

Beneath its tragedy is a deep belief that compassion can transform lives, that even the wounded are worthy of love, and that hope can survive alongside grief. Characters like Jean Valjean, Fantine, and Éponine embody both the beauty and pain of loving deeply in a world that does not always love them back, which is what gives the story its enduring emotional power.

I was lucky enough to play Éponine once. Her song was my audition song for years, and her plight has resonated with me recently. My favorite recording of the show is the original London cast.

I love that song. I had to sing it at a recital when I was a teen. I loved the production too

Hamilton is great too

@Kypro Love Hamilton, too
One Touch of Venus -Kurt Weill and Ogden Nash. The musical which gave us "Speak Low".
Speak low, when you speak love
Our summer day
Withers away
Too soon, too soon
Speak low, when you speak love
Our moment is swift
Like ships adrift
We're swept apart too soon
Speak low, darling, speak low
Love is a spark
Lost in the dark
Too soon, too soon
I feel wherever I go
That tomorrow is near
Tomorrow is here
And always too soon
Time is so old
And love so brief
Love is pure gold
And time a thief
We're late, darling, we're late
The curtain descends
Everything ends
Too soon, too soon
I wait, darling, I wait
Will you speak low to me
Speak love to me--
And soon?

Probably love it because the show is not a tearjerker (despite the live and love now while we still can sentiment of the song).
Agree on Les Mis. I watch the 10 year anniversary with the dream cast quite often

Les Misérables is of course wonderful and I must have seen it half a dozen times. I always find nominating a favourite difficult. If we include opera nothing can come close to La Bohème, for musicals probably West Side Story. If I can give an honourable mention however to two less well known works. I love Kurt Weil’s Street Scene, not like his laboured political efforts but very much in the gritty American musical mode. And also the now hopelessly neglected The Immortal Hour by Rutland Boughton. Here is What Good Would the Moon Be from Stree Scene.

And of course the Luring Song from The Immortal Hour

@JoeXP Thank you. I'm not familiar with either Street Scene nor The Immortal Hour. I've only seen The Magic Flute, but I'd love to see La Bohème. I played Maria in West Side Story once. I love that musical, too. :)

@ChampagneOnIce Both can be seen in full on YouTube. Well worth a watch.

Great show!

Great question and there are so many good ones. I really love Guys and Dolls. Great lyrics that really capture the original Damon Runyon material. Incredible songs, both funny and romantic. I can watch it over and over.
ChampagneOnIce · 51-55, F
@Harmonium1923 Oh, that’s a good one, too!
I with says Le Mis, too.
I watched the theater play twice.
I watched the movies too.

I understand what you mean about the story line and music resonating with you.
“I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life
I've only been pretending
Without me
His world will go on turning”
ChampagneOnIce · 51-55, F
@CookieCrumbs That last line especially, yes. 😔
ChampagneOnIce · 51-55, F
@CookieCrumbs Éponine is my favorite role I’ve ever played. “A Little Fall of Rain” is so good, too.

One day I will see this or listen to whole soundtrack. I see it’s a favorite of many. My favorite musical is Wicked, which I saw 2x on Broadway, followed by Beautiful and Rent.
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@ChampagneOnIce Tapestry might be the best album ever recorded but I swear it’s the one I least listen too. She continued to make amazing music throughout the 90’s that didn’t get enough recognition. Beautiful had a good run on Broadway, almost 6 years, but I wish it had become a staple. It needs a movie that was rumored but so far nothing. By the way her daughter has a song called Pink Champagne. It’s pretty good. I’ll send a link if you would like.
ChampagneOnIce · 51-55, F
@4thdimensiondream Sure. I’d be happy to listen to it. I like the title. :)

@ChampagneOnIce thats why I mentioned it! She’s a lot diff than her Mom.[media=https://youtu.be/cgFq9FddnLA]

Les Mis is my favorite. I have a DVD of the concert version with only the music, and I watch it often. Phantom of the Opera or The Producers would be my second favorite. I have seen all three more than once and enjoy the shows every time.

Les Mis is an amazing, sad and human story, I've seen many screen adaptations but not the play, probably would be a good idea for me to go....
ChampagneOnIce · 51-55, F
@fun4us2b The stage play is better than the movie, in my opinion. There’s nothing quite like live theatre.
fun4us2b · M
@ChampagneOnIce I agree.

@ChampagneOnIce I know she was in the movie, was she on Broadway? I’m looking it up.
ChampagneOnIce · 51-55, F
@Thatsright The movie for sure, not sure about Broadway
Thatsright · 61-69, M
She wasn’t in the original Broadway cast. It had great players throughout its run.
Gibbon · 70-79, M
Not much for musicals but Trouble in River City does come to mind. The Music Man. Yeah I know but my parents took me to see it twice.
ChampagneOnIce · 51-55, F
@Gibbon I don’t like The Music Man. 😄
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@ChampagneOnIce I had that feeling that's why I tossed in "Yeah I know"
