Jaco Pastorius with Alphonse Mouzon and Albert Mangelsdorff

Those of you who think Jaco Pastorius was just one of those funky chunky bass players: listen to this music, recorded when Jaco was at the height of his tenure with Weather Report. Albert Mangelsdorff plays trombone multiphonics (more than one note at once, using overtone singing), and Alphonse Mouzon ('the animal') does what he has to do.
I know it's not for everyone, but maybe it's for you, dear reader? 🌷

Nice post! Brings back memories. Had the opportunity to see Weather Report live at the Saddle Rack in San Jose, CA back around 1980. Jaco was incredible and really knew how to make a fretless bass sound amazing. Sad to see him go before his time. Definitely one of the greatest jazz bassists of all time, in my opinion. Nathan East is another good one. :)

@helenS He is basically a session player and has done work with Toto. He’s been involved long term with Four Play, a quartet of long time jazz greats.

@rfatoday Oh – I think I've heard Four Play (funny name 🤭) before! That's music from the smooth jazz corner, right?
rfatoday · 61-69, M
@helenS Yes it is.

Jaco was ahead of his time, bass players understood him.
BLP11520 · 61-69, M
@helenS I did not know that
helenS · 36-40, F
@BLP11520 Listen to "Night and the City" by Charlie and Kenny Barron and you will know what I mean. Here's an example:

The music is sublime, of course, but it's not exactly free jazz 😏

@helenS Relaxing....

As a bassist myself i admire Jaco and his musical abilities,however i just don't like his music.

@Entwistle Love the username! "The Ox", "Thunderfingers". :)
helenS · 36-40, F
@Entwistle But isn't the tune I posted here rather unusual, when it's about Jaco?
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@helenS A little.

I love this record!
helenS · 36-40, F
@ajent86 I love how the American rhythm section plays with a European-style soloist. It's nothing short of fantastic.
ajent86 · 56-60, M
@helenS Funny, I was thinking I love how the European soloist locks in with the American rhythm section.

He has another album on that same label with Elvin. Killing.

@ajent86 Your first sentence was thoughtful 🌷
I have that album with Elvin Jones, and Palle Danielsson on bass. It's called "The Wide Point". Yes fantastic music, with Europeans being the majority of the players! 😌

Amazing bass player. Tragic life but no other like him
