Do you like cover bands?

Sleeping Beauty and I spent all day today with my parents and this evening they took us out to dinner and a show.

The show was a Jimmy Buffett tribute band. I looked it up and the theater seats about seven hundred and was less than half full ... so maybe like two hundred fifty people. Small intimate concert. But people were up and dancing. It was fun.

We didn't know a lot of the music but my parents sure did. Dad is absolutely a Parrothead (learned that term today) and spent a lot of the time on his feet.

So... this was new for me. I don't see a lot of live music ... large venues always set off my paranoid security senses so I avoid big concerts. But this was okay; actually fun.

Do you like cover bands? Small venue concerts?

Saw Springsteen last week and I do enjoy his concerts because he puts on quite a show. Took a cruise last winter and the ship band was very talented but I have to say I’m not a fan of cruise ship entertainment. I actually enjoy bands that are great musicians and do covers. The band Venice is most excellent live. I’ve seen John mellencsmp in a small venue (200 people) and I enjoyed that the most. Famous acts in a small venue are amazing. I’ve also seen and heard Aretha Franklin in a small venue back in the day.

@BiasForAction Given his age I'd expect him to slowdown but he doesn't seem to know the term. Excellent performer who seems to value his fans.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@BiasForAction Yes... This is why I asked both questions... The small venue thing I liked a lot. Last night was my first small-venue, live music experience. I very much enjoyed that.

Cruise ship, eh? Never been on one. Was it fun?

There are a few cover bands I like. Locally, there’s an 80s cover band and a Beatles one that are quite good. I also like Yachtly Crew, a yacht rock band. I saw Duran Duran at the House of Blues years ago. That was an intimate concert and so good. I’ve seen them several times in large and small venues. I like live music and go to concerts now and then, and I frequent a local jazz club, too.

Whenever The Dwebbs (WI local cover band) come around, I try to see them whenever I can, cause they're really good and it's a blast. They did No Doubt's "Hella Good" last time I saw them, and Everyone was blown away. 😆
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Levenrack Very cool. Important that they are good at covering whatever they're doing.

I really enjoy many really good coversand tribute band and played in a couple myself....for lots of reasons
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Justme264 Oh nice!
I have actually played in several cover bands.
We would sneak in an original or two in among the covers. That way they got to hear songs they knew & they also got to hear the level of our writing talent.
Cover bands make it possible for people to hear their favorite music live without spending big $$$ to hear it from the original artist. Most of which have died over the years, anyway.
Justin Hayward is the last survivor of The Moody Blues. I play four of their songs & people seem to like the version I play.
As long as they enjoy it, I'll keep trying to provide entertainment for them.

I was at a place today and the band covered a lot.

I love cover bands and most are very good.
My last concert was Leonid and Friends and they play mostly Chicago music and some from The Carpenters and a few others..but excellent music
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Midlifemale It's all new to me, but last night was fun.

About 2 months ago I saw a really good tribute band who did covers of Joni Mitchell's "Blue" album, plus many other artists from the "Laurel Canyon era". It was very intimate, in the live lounge of the world-famous Cavern Club.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@ArtieKat Nice. I'm thinking I might've found something I can really enjoy.
ArtieKat · M
@sarabee1995 I love the nickname you've given your missus! 😸

I don't mind bands doing cover versions of popular songs, but I'm not into those covers being slavish cloned copies of those songs; I prefer an interpretation to a simple note-for-note copy.
AngelaR80 · 46-50, F
I've played in cover bands but prefer doing original stuff but that's much more difficult to get bookings.

I love smaller venues especially now I have bad hearing. I saw Nigel Kennedy last week in a small theatre, (~1000) was a fabulous night.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
No. Never liked crowds, even small crowds in the hundreds.

Have yet to even go to any big sporting event even.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@DeWayfarer Same. I've never been to a very large sporting or music event. No interest. A small place like last night, I can handle.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@sarabee1995 You said
maybe like two hundred fifty people.

That's in the hundreds. That's too many for me.

I used to listen to a guy singing in lobby arena of a trucking motel playing for tips. I doubt there was more than 30 ever. That is more my style.

Yeah, I learned later the motel paid him as well.

If a restaurant's max capacity sign says more than 100, I'll shy away from the place as well.
Sometimes. In the late 80s in the Boston area there was a group that called itself "The Band that Time Forgot." They would cover hard rock classics from the 60s. I particularly remember them doing In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly. I really appreciated hearing that live.
ArtieKat · M
@ElwoodBlues I love "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida"! It pops up on shuffle every now and then but you've just prompted me to put it on now! 😸
SleepingWithGhosts · 46-50, M
I hate cover bands.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@SleepingWithGhosts Lol, okay!
SleepingWithGhosts · 46-50, M
@sarabee1995 I didn't mean to come off as rude. I love live music, I just wouldn't pay to see a band that wasn't the real thing.
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
In some cases
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@vetguy1991 Yeah, seems like the kinda thing that could go either way.
Captainjackass · 31-35, M
Idk never been to a concert. Thats surprising that it’s Jimmy Buffet, he’s infamous for not letting others use his music. Even the radio couldn’t play it without him demanding money.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Captainjackass He owned his own music? Don't most artists produce under contract to some studio or label? Plus, doesn't every song played in public (including radio) generate royalties to someone?
Captainjackass · 31-35, M
@sarabee1995 I have no idea but thats just what I’ve heard.
My local theatre holds about 300 people and I love watching shows there.
Close to the stage..even from my preferred seat in the back row.

Tribute bands are great…seen several Beatle Acts,an ELO band,Australian Pink Floyd,UK Pink Floyd Experience,3 Queen tributes,a couple of Meatloaf acts,a Bee Gees one and a David Bowie one.Plus a Cliff Richard/Hank Marvin one.
Never seen a bad tribute act.
But the original act is preferable if possible.Saw Graham Nash in the Autumn.Put on a great show at 83 years of age.
I prefer to avoid arenas if I can…needs to be The Corrs to get me in one.
They are shortly building a 15,000 seater concert arena in Cardiff.
Don’t fancy seeing a show in there.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@TheSirfurryanimalWales I'm with you on the very large venues. Just not my thing. Way too people-ly.
