It's strange how some bands can be so highly acclaimed despite not being very influential on other bands

I was just thinking about some major players from the '90s and while they may have been critically and commercially successful, they aren't really regarded as visionaries who changed the musical landscape. The Smashing Pumpkins are a good example. To quote one journalist: "Whereas Nirvana spawned countless mini-Nirvanas, the Pumpkins remain an island unto themselves." Red Hot Chili Peppers were instrumental in the development of rap rock and nu metal, but that's about it. Suede were the original Brtipop group, but they were immediately overshadowed by Blur, Oasis and Pulp.

You look back on all the old bands hailed as legendary today and a big reason why is the impact they made on music that can still be felt today. I guess it goes to show that one doesn't have to be some big music pioneer to be a hit or even to carry on a legacy. Rare as it may be... Can you think of any other older bands or artists whose music might have stood the test of time, but not for how musically innovative it was?
