“The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore” – The Walker Brothers

[media=https://youtu.be/dWCoe3nMvN0]
On this day in 1966, the Walker Brothers’ cover of “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore” (it was originally recorded by Frankie Valli) made it to #1 in the UK. It reached the top 10 in at least six other countries and peaked at #13 in the US.

According to one source, this is regarded as a “death song” in the UK because of an incident that occurred on March 9, 1966. That's when notorious gangster Ronnie Kray shot and killed rival gangster George Cornell in a London pub. The song supposedly was playing on the pub's jukebox during the shooting and a stray bullet hit the machine, causing the record to repeat the line "The sun ain't gonna shine anymore…anymore…anymore...” while Cornell lay dying a few feet away.

Don’t know how much of this I believe. The part about Kray killing Cornell in a pub is true, but I’m not so sure about the rest of it.

Always enjoy your posts on music history.
I remember asking my music prof in Uni if this song was perhaps produced by Phil Spector, as it had that “Wall of Sound” style to it. He wasn’t sure, but didn’t think so.
This was pre-internet. I’ve since discovered that it wasn’t.
I prefer their version to the Four Seasons one

@Ghostinthemachine Much appreciated. I'm glad you enjoy my music posts.

That's exactly what I was thinking. The recording does indeed have a "Wall of Sound" sound to it, very much like something Phil Spector would have produced.

It's a great story though...I thought I had read the Walker Brothers were American who moved to the UK to further their career?
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@Convivial I think that's right. They moved to the UK in 1965, and I believe it was for that reason.
SpudMuffin · 61-69, M
Great song, one of my earliest memories. Didn't know about the Kray story though!
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@SpudMuffin I only just learned of the Kray story myself.
Good tune as.was “ Make it easy on yourself”.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@soar2newhighs Yes, "Make It Easy on Yourself" is also a good song. The Walker Brothers did a nice job with their version of it.
ReneeT · 61-69, F
I am not sure about that story either, but this one is my favorite Walker Brothers song.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@ReneeT It is a great song, and also my favorite by them.
Lilymoon · F
Wow... cool story and kinda prophetic in a way.
Nice song too
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@Lilymoon Yes, I agree. Haven't been able to confirm it, though.

I really like the song too.
ArtieKat · M
Never heard that part of the story before! Still a great song
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@ArtieKat A great song indeed. I've been listening to it on loop for the past couple of hours.
hunkalove · 70-79, M
I had the album. That was the best song on it.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@hunkalove This might be the only song I've heard from the album.
GoFish ·
It's possibly true.. who knows 🤐😳
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@GoFish It's certainly possible that it is true. I just haven't seen enough evidence to confirm it.
GoFish ·
