I wish I could play a musical instrument

I was watching someone play piano the other day and it was so beautiful. I wish I could play. I tried to learn to play the flute a long time back and got nowhere. Keyboards look even harder.

I play flute. Keep trying it. I don't remember how long it was until I could even make a sound, but it was a while. It's a very finicky instrument. I first picked it up in 6th grade band and played all throughout high school. I played very little after high school, and picked it up again when the covid lockdowns hit. Now I play often. I'm considering getting a new flute
I tried guitar and it is a bit difficult unless you work with an instructor. Over time it becomes easier and you feel more confident. You will get there with the piano too

@mindlessdrifter The guitar is my biggest regret. The sounds one can get out of that thing are simply beautiful. I should have put more effort into learning it
Have access to a piano? Never too late to start learning...just have to make the time to do it.

@sundazzled you don't need a piano. If you already have a PC, then get yourself a midi controller on the cheap, you can download a free DAW (digital audio workstation) and some free piano based VSTs (virtual studio technology) which are just programs that mimic the sound of a real instrument, and get to practicing to see if you have the patience to learn. Once you figure you genuinely are up to it, invest in the real thing
@iamnikki I can still manage the octaves but my fingers lack the dexterity they once had years ago. But that's just me being out of practice...some actual exercises and over time I think I could get some of speed back.

@Benjago makes sense. I'm still trying to get back to where I was. I could run up and down the scales smoothly on my flute. Can't do it very well or quickly now🫣

From the age of 4 to 14 I was gently forced to take piano lessons. I hated every minute of it.
I haven't touched a piano keyboard since.

You, however, want to learn so... I have every confidence one day you will take that step. Maybe the drums?
RenFur · 70-79, M
@iamnikki

Why didn't you get the chance to play the piano? Seems mighty unfair you didn't get to.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@RenFur I guess because they got lessons and didn't stick with it, so why take the chance on me?
If I had longer fingers, I'd take lessons now but I want to be able to play octaves and it is just not possible for me.

@iamnikki

I was in a high school band - I wanted (like most of the guys) to play the trumpet but I didn't have the ability so I had to play the baritone. Short fingers for you and no blowing power for me... c'est la vie.

I tried guitar when I was a teen and just couldn’t get it

Any musical instrument requires practice and commitment except the kazoo. a theremin may look easy but it's precise positions of hands and shapes, I still struggle with violin even though mine is mounted on a strap so I don't have to hold it under my chin. I'd love to have a Mark Woods Viper but I don't have that amount of money
TheFragile · 46-50, M
I would love to learn how to play guitar.
TheOthetAcc · 36-40, M
I used to be a samples based beat maker, I also studied as a sound engineer so I got a bit of knowledge about keys and all that but learning how to play was always a problem. Lol. I say go for it, what do you have to lose?
thepreposterouspanda · 36-40, M
It's hard to get started for sure but it's so fulfilling once you get better at it. :) I'm a self-taught guitarist who has been playing for 21 years now and I love it so much.

Try a few different instruments, one might take more than the others. I started on drums decades ago, but along the way I tried guitar and piano, and strangely enough I even sing harmonies now. But drums are it for me.

If you're really determined, nothing can stop you.
Most strings are pretty easy. You can get a ukulele for not too much and try it out
GLITTER · 36-40, F
If you like strings you could learn to play the ukulele it’s super easy to learn
wuiop2 · 41-45
They may look harder, but they're just a different layout.

Try listening to music you love imo. I only learnt guitar because I fell in love with a song on guitar that I had a great emotional attachment to. And that song was a guitar cover of a beautiful orchestral piece from an anime.

So... Long story short, if you find a song you love, buy a 50$ guitar and give it a go.
I always think of this when I hear them play.

It takes a lot of practice. I took 3 classes of piano.

@therighttothink50 my mom is a Celtic Thunder fan. I bought her tickets to see them live, long time ago.
therighttothink50 · 56-60, M
@sundazzled I saw them live in US many years ago, their first tour.
I wish I had time to play 😔

Start slow -- take up the concert triangle.

Never too late to start...
