From the mid-1970s, an unfinished novel I was writing:
"This is the moment we've alll been waiting for. You are about to see history in the making. Calling themselves The Nazgul, for this once in a lifetime gig together, would you please welcome on stage: on drums - Mr Keith Moon of the Who; on bass guitar and violin, Mr Rick Grech of Family and Blind Faith; on rhythm guitar and harmonica, Mr Blind Owl Wilson from Canned Heat; on keyboards Mr Pigpen McKernan of the Grateful Dead; on vocals," and here his voice went up an octave, "Mr Jim Morrison and Miss Janis Joplin! And on lead guitar - Mr Jimi HENDRIX! They are - The Nazgul!"
A once-in-a-lifetime appearance was what Stu Roscoe had called it - but was any of them aware of the Grim Reaper waiting invisibly in the wings? This divine bill would read in retrospect like an obituary notice compiled by Satan.
