Mixtape/Playlist Of 80's Music...

If you could put a mixtape (or CD) or playlist of great 80's music...what would you put on?

Mine would have Madonna, Debbie Gibson, Yazoo, The Human League, Depeche Mode, Blondie, ABBA and, maybe...just maybe....a spot of Kylie....

What would be on yours?

🥰

I have many mixtapes of 80's music.

Back in mid 2000's, I started doing mixtapes of 80's music.

It was a passion project of mine I called 80's Beats, Volumes 1-12.

The intent was to do a compilation album in the vein of many K-Tel compilation records like K-Tel's Radio Active, Sound Explosion, Star Tracks, Chart Hits and so on.

And true to the form of many of those compilation records, I compiled them as one artist for every title, like if I had one song by let's say... Duran Duran, I couldn't put a second song by the same group on the same tape because I wanted to keep the playlist as diverse as possible.

Some of the artists featured on these mix tapes include songs by Asia, The Human League, Joan Jett and the Blachhearts, Split Enz, Little River Band, Yes, Eurythmics, The Police, The Parachute Club, Styx, The Motels, Sheena Easton, Culture Club, Gary U.S. Bonds, Dead or Alive, Gary Numan, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Genesis, Robert Palmer, Dire Straits, Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, Corey Hart, Rush, Gowan, Thomas Dolby, The Outfield, Night Ranger, Rough Trade, The Payola$, Grace Jones, Tears For Fears, Joy Division, New Order, Bonnie Tyler, Laura Branigan, Eddy Grant, Irene Cara, Robert Palmer, Prince and the Revolution, Murray Head, Hall and Oates, Blondie, David Bowie and Ray Parker Jr, to name a few.

@AnnMayonaise Did Matthew Wilder ever do anything else except "Break My Stride"? I still hear that one on the radio but they never play anything else by him. Is he a one-hit wonder? I guess he is.
AnnMayonaise · 22-25, F
@HairbrushDiva he has a few good songs but not mainstream
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F

@KarenDuponteDurose It's one of Madonna's most popular hits in my neighbourhood. Most of my friends have told me they play the "True Blue" album more often than other Madonna albums. It also has "Papa Don't Preach", "La Isla Bonita", "Open Your Heart" and "Live To Tell", making it one of her best albums all in all.

In addition to my aforementioned 80's Beats mixtape project, I also compiled a few mixtapes of Japanese pop music from the 70's and 80's, featuring the music of artists like Mariya Takeuchi, Tatsuro Yamashita, Toshiki Kadomatsu, Tomoko Aran, Makoto Matsushita, Hiroshi Sato, Junko Yagami, Yumi Matsutoya, and Masahito Arai, to name a few.

@KarenDuponteDurose lol - I was just joking - that’s why I put the ;). lol

I actually remember waiting all day for my favorite song to come on my jam box so that I could record it. I made several mixed tapes - those were the good ol days - when we could call in to the radio station and request a song

@HotPizza71 Ha! Good call, pet!

Well, the household is very eclectic! We have all the Frank Zappa stuff (and boy, did he make a lot of records! Hope says she has 60 of his albums and that's nowhere near how many he made!) and Steve Vai and all that guitar stuff, the wife loves her rock, blues and country, and I'm there...stuck in the 80's! Lol!

@KarenDuponteDurose 80's were the best Kaz x
ABBA only had two albums in the early 80's, Super Trouper (1980) and the Visitors (1981). The Visitors was a commercial flop as Super Trouper was essentially their farewell album due to their collective divorces, the Visitors was essentially to fulfill their recording contract deals so they didn't put too much effort into it, it doesn't have their usual upbeat sound, and they didn't tour. The album disappointed a lot of my fellow ABBA fans and were turned on, it became very unpopular to like them throughout the 80's Yes, Benny and Bjorn had some success with Chess (One Night in Bangkok), but Anita and Agnetha's solo attempts went nowhere. Their comeback in 1994 with Gold was a fluke.
@KarenDuponteDurose Their video cover of Take a Chance on Me was uber flamboyant and extremely cringey.

I had been an ABBA fan since they won Eurovision in 1974 with Waterloo whwn I was four. I had every single album they released and stayed loyal to them throughout the 80's, putting up with ridiculous amounts of ridicule from my classmates, and pointing out to them that One Night in Bangkok was technically an unsung ABBA song that Benny and Bjorn wrote for the group to put on their 1977 Arrival album in the Girl with Golden Hair mix, but the producers said it would have made it too long and expensive for the album, so they eventually put it in their 1984 Chess musical as a main song.

I am not calling ABBA itself as a group one hit wonders, just Frida's and Agnetha's 80's solo attempts as one hit wonders. Learn. To. Read.

@NativePortlander1970 I...am...reading!

Yes, I know of the 'One Night...' track,,,,and, yes, the girl's career hadn't flourished worldwide, but I believe they were still having hits in their native country....

...and, I guess you could compare 'The Visitors' to Fleetwood Mac's 'Tusk' album...in comparison to 'Rumours......(I put the 'u' there 'cos i'm a Brit! Lol!)...

It only sold 5 million worldwide...

😘
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@NativePortlander1970 I love Abba.
