I have pondered this before and believe it is just a filtering process. Every year a hundred or more songs are released, chart, and fade into obscurity. A few survive, most are forgotten. Over many years it is the better selections which accumulate in our collections. Pick a random year and pull up the Billboard top 100 for that year. See how many you remember or have heard recently.
