The Weirdest Thing That Ever Happened To Me
This would almost have made a good Twilight Zone episode. I've written about it before, but not as its own thread.
In the days before the Internet, I had ordered an imported CD from a local store. It was not available in the US.
The title was "Real To Reel" by a favorite band, Marillion. It was a live album.
The CD store called me up to tell me it had come in. I turned off my stereo system, which had been playing Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here", and drove off to the store. When I returned, I was elated to have the disc. I broke open the hard plastic blister pack(remember those?) and placed the CD in my player.
I was expecting to hear a fading up of crowd noise, but instead, I heard the familiar Gm7 chord of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", which of course is the first track on Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here".
"Ah," I thought. "I must have put the new disc on top of the Floyd one!", as my old Yamaha player would actually still play the disc on the bottom.
Then, I picked up the case for the Pink Floyd disc and opened it. Yup, there it was: the "Wish You Were Here" CD but I could still hear the first track playing. I'm holding it in my hand.....and I'm listening to it come out of my speakers!!
So now, I am considerably freaking out. Is this what happens when you go insane? What could be the issue?
Guess what? In England, both Marillion and Pink Floyd shared the same record company (EMI), and there is an entire run of this disc that mistakenly plays Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here".
Now, what are the chances that, of the HUNDREDS of CDs I own, I picked the EXACT one that EMI used in error when making this disc, and not only that, it was the one I played BEFORE I played the Marillion one?
I thought my brain snapped like a twig. Weirds me out even to type it. So there you go.
