When Prince changed his name to "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince", how were we supposed to pronounce that weird symbol he used?

SomeMichGuyM Best Comment

@SomeMichGuy I had to give it the BC, it's just the sort of word I find amusing. Lol :)

'The Artist Formerly Known As Prince' was the best anyone came up with that I know.

But it worked didn't it. Everyone knew who it was.

@Crazychick The first few times I heard this on the radio I mistakenly assumed it was the Beegees. And all of his work got plenty of airtime here in Minnesota.

There were some not so fond of Prince as others(haters?) - they'd refer to him as 'Symbolina' in reference to his new 'name.'

@hlpflwthat Symbolina sounds like a feminine name. Mind you, some of the Bee Gees songs are a bit on the effeminate side as well. We've had "Staying Alive" on the radio today and we had "How Deep Is Your Love" at the weekend.

@Crazychick He certainly wouldn't be accused of hiding his feminine side, though he sang a lot less falsetto than the Brothers Gibb. Here's another tho - complete with him doubling on bass at the intro. Shot at his house in Chanhassen.

edit*** Oooops - here's the vid ;)

I clearly remember when they announced this in the 1990s. He went by that long title for at least 6-8 years until he felt it got his message across (had to do with his recordings/contracts which he fought for the rights to his own material and such). RIP Prince.

you werent, that was the point, warner bros had trade marked his actual name, and they wanted more poppy music and in less quantity so in order to to what he wanted he renounced his birth name.
Crazychick36-40, F
@wheels1972 We weren't supposed to pronounce it? Then how were people supposed to ask for his latest album if they didn't see it in the shops?

What did he do instead of poppy music? Rose music? Carnation music? Daffodil music? Geranium music? Lily music?
wheels1972M
@Crazychick hahha i meant poppy as is pop! and people soon came up with alternative names for him.
