I play the piano and often wanted to learn how to play the guitar. Unfortunately for myself I wasn't able to really use what I knew about chord progressions and reading music to help as much as I had hoped. The guitar is hard! Glad to hear you found it helped you!

@lovelychicadee

My keyboard fried tells me it is difficult ...

But there are a few things online that make learning the guitar much much easier ...
The great thing about the guitar the voicings and fingering for chords travel all the way up the neck ...

Like piano , learning the simple triad on inversions gives you a a great boost to expanding your skill set

guitar is harder than keys, facts

@Matt85

Not if you are doing challenging music ,,,
Then they are equally hard ...

As well , this post is not a contest between instruments , its about the idea of learning another instrument to improve the skill on your first learned instrument ....

I learned more taking my knowledge of violin (than saxophone) and implementing it on piano. After all they're both stringed instruments. However, you can pluck a violin string as well as on a guitar, but not really on a piano. I figure you'd have to reach in and pluck the string(s) the hammer hits, but this would probably take it out of tune.

I play the guitar and know a few songs on piano... Through my experience I have noticed that it is so much easier for me to determine chords on a piano than on the guitar. This is a very good advice and I hope to advance my piano playing skills in near future.

@nick030

That's the thing ......

you can do voicing on the piano that are impossible on the guitar, and vice versa, but when you play both it stretches your learning and the possibilities

Played first chair saxophone and violin in high school, but put them down so long ago. Didn't think I'd even be able to find middle C on either of them if I bought one. But after reading back through my book on music theory, I suddenly found myself buying a finger board and practicing for the hell of it. That progressed to listening to a big favorite of mine and finally figuring out what Dudley Moore is actually doing with his hands on the piano...

Ended up buying an Alesis Recital Grand digital piano with 88 weighted keys and hammer action I felt were important if I ever want to realistically play on a real piano. I'm a classical lover at heart and this instrument spoke to me. Working on perfecting finger placement as I work my way up to chord progressions. So much to learn!

馃挴 Same for me - I'm not sure where I heard it but someone said, "All guitarists should own a piano"

I think the keyboard helps layout the notes in a linear way and does something to the brain that makes thing work better...

Taught myself with YouTube tutoring the Mandolin during the Lockdowns
Much easier to carry a round than a guitar

Good advice.
I鈥檝e been playing the piano, organ and harpsichord for the last 55 years. I wanted to learn guitar and found that more difficult.
fun4us2bM
@bijouxbroussard Wow, I bet you are really good!

The finger positions are tough at first, but you can do a lot with 5 basic open chords...and you already know how the chords sound in music...

@bijouxbroussard

Good advice above ...

I always suggest , learning 3 chords on the guitar , and learn a bunch of rhythm patterns.,,, you will be surprised at the incredible amount of variation ...

Rythymn is where this instrument carry's its heart and soul , playing solos and melody is just icing on the cake ....

@BobbyMoeven 馃挴 Well said

I wish I could

I grew up with a pianola . We had like over 500 rolls . It seemed so superfluous to learn, but I wish I had now.
I learn flute. I loved it. I wish I hadn't given it up .
OogieBoogieF
@BobbyMoeven I'm quite envious . I'm not musically inclined ....as much as I loved the flute, my arty thing isn't music . Well, at least that's what my brother said 馃槒
BobbyMoeven51-55, M
@OogieBoogie

Don't listen to your brother ....... siblings are the worst at criticism ..lol.

It's never too late to pick up an instrument ,,,, It really is my perfect place for getting a bit lost , exploring and finding solace ... I really wish I had more time , private time to play ..... I also wish I could jam more with my friends, its such a great great feeling , connecting with someone musically
OogieBoogieF
@BobbyMoeven I imagine it's a great high when you get to jam with someone 馃
