Depends totally on the mood, ranging from banjo for upbeat frivolity to saxophone for melancholy to bagpipes (without the mountain goat) for sad/mournful. The three with the broadest ranges in the right hands are the piano, acoustic guitar, and trumpet.

I don't know about the coolest but sarangi, duduk, erhu and morin khuur have beautiful sound. Classical violin is great too, of course.

If used in a cool way, I think my favourites are saxophone and accordion. That said, I do fancy the harp and hurdy gurdy too.
