Was Chicago destroyed in Terminator?

I know in Terminator, Skynet starts a nuclear war and many cities around the planet are destroyed. The Terminator wiki says in the original timeline T-800s invaded Chicago and killed the majority of its population. Does this mean Chicago for some reason was spared from the nuclear war or could it have been nuked then the machines invade?
