If he had no emotions then how could he yearn to be "human"?

Think you need to read something outside of star trek to understand the process. Like Isaac Asimov's robot series. I do mean the whole series because the robots depicted are progressive over thousands of years.

Notably Isaac Asimov was a well known mathematician in addition to a science fiction author. Also he coined the word "robot"!
