I Love Star Trek
Oh yes .... having attended the FIRST Star Trek Convention, when there wasn't anything to buy except piles of 35mm half frames cut from the original outtakes, the term is "Trekkers" NOT "trekkies" as the press spoke of us. At the time, "trekkies" was definitely a pejorative amongst the fans and faithful. We celebrated for three days, an instant camaraderie with people from all walks of life. We hung out in each other's rooms at the Commodore Hotel in NYC, and immersed ourselves in 16MM episodes that screened 24 hours a day! The organizers expected maybe 500 people -- they got nearly 3,000!
I met my first wife at one of the early conventions when she was dressed as "The Empath".
In my mind, these days, "Trekkies" are the young fans who've come aboard with the fine new JJ Abrams films and cast, and it's not a pejorative anymore -- for them. That's the delineation between the generations as far as I am concerned. What do you think?
