Why I’m bored of today’s superhero movies

First there’s the issue of just having so many of them. Sequel after sequel after prequel after spinoff after…there’s just no more originality. They keep pumping out the same movies about the same superheroes over and over again, and I can’t even keep track of what I have and haven’t seen.

But there’s a more important and significant reason I’m bored of superhero movies that I just came to realize the other day. I was watching a Jordan Peterson video the other day, and he mentioned how superhero movies’ popularity today is likely due to the lack of heroism in real life. That got me thinking…

I’m not bored of superhero movies because I don’t like superheroes. I actually do if it’s done right. One of my favorite superhero movies was the original Spider-Man movie that came out in the late 1990s/early 2000s. I also enjoyed the Wonder Woman movie that came out 5-ish (?) years ago. And do you know why?

Because they focused on HEROism, like JP said. We need heroism, and those movies focused on the fact these characters are heroes. Most of the other superheroes coming out today focus not on the HERO part, but the SUPER part. They’ve basically become fantasy movies.

Why was the original Spider-Man so good? Because he saved ordinary people from danger. He swung on his web, picked civilians up who were about to get run over, etc. The movie also focused more on saving the good guys than fighting the bad guys.

Most of today’s superhero movies are the opposite. They hardly ever interact with civilians or save people. All they do is team up to defeat a supervillain, who also rarely interacts with the public, making the movie not very relatable.

If superhero movies want to be inspiring and give people the heroism that they crave, they need to focus more on the HERO part, not the SUPER part.
