Back then our theaters canceled all showings and refunded people's money due to an organized protest from local leaders, churches, and concerned citizens. It didn't come out until much later. "Rosemary's Baby" got the same treatment. Based on a true story that happened to a boy, in retrospect after finally watching it I can understand the reasons why. Pazuzu. I bought the 45 record of the theme song that still remains mesmerizing as it brings back memories of the experience to this day. Much later I eventually bought the movie and think that its message, as well as its intended consequences, are timeless and perhaps should be taken more seriously because of the implied battle that's going on in the background where all are involved.
