Fantastic British Comedy.

Originally posted in 2022.

It's hard to express the impact of 'Monty Python' on people these days - lots of humour have had that zany flavour in recent years - but, back then, in the late 60's/early 70's I'm sure it was pretty ground-breaking.

I say that because I was introduced to Python via my dad who'd video tape the episodes off of TV, when it was on late on Saturday nights so I'm led to believe, back in the early 80's in the UK. I was too young then (probably about 5 or 6) but I came through that style of comedy thanks to that wonderful duo of Ade and Rick of 'Bottom' - Classic British comedy.

Trawling back through 'The Young Ones', 'Black Adder' and 'The Kenny Everett TV Show' I found myself back to the source, 'Monty Python'.

As a 14/15 year old it was complete surreal mayhem! Far more disordered than these later shows but a whole sensory giggle experience.

Well written, inspired and always takes me back to my teen years.

They'll never be anything like Monty Python ever again.

You've mentioned some all time classics, from when comedy was allowed to be funny and snowflakes didn't exist.
Another from the 70s is Fawlty Towers, it only ran for two series but that didn't stop it from being one of the all time classic British sit coms.
Bottom was absolutely hilarious, I still watch it and wish I'd been lucky enough to see it live on stage.
However, every one of those mentioned pale into insignificance compared to the hilarious and brilliantly written Only Fools and Horses, probably the best sit com in the history of comedy.

@RodneyTrotter1 "Fawlty Towers" we love! Probably the very best! "Bottom - Live!", my partner and I saw on tour. That was riotous! Let's add "Father Ted" and "The Young Ones" to the list too!

@KarenDuponteDurose1 I've got a Bottom Live show on dvd, it's hilarious and they have to keep stopping because they can't stop laughing.
Never seen Father Ted but loved The Young Ones. I'll give Father Ted a go.

When you consider those guys were paid peanuts for some truly original stuff that was soundly rejected by commissioning heads at the time for being too surreal....must have been frustrating.

And the films !
Thank God for George Harrison or we might never have seen any of it.

Nobody else in my family liked Monty Python, but I watched them whenever I could. I loved their humor.

I remember when it first appeared on PBS in Albuquerque in about 1975. I had never seen anything like it. I was hooked from the beginning. Still am.

Another early British gem from the 70s was „Some Mothers do ‚ave‘ them with Michael Crawford
