I seldom watch a horror movie where there’s not a main character that does something lacking in common sense

But when you're the main character in a horror movie, that's just what you do: even if you're a perfectly sane individual, you do things no rational-minded person would do to progress the plot. It wouldn't be a horror flick if the main character(s) didn't make at least one stupid decision, right? 🤪
