I've always found what's scary is very much in the eye of the beholder. My cousin says the original Exorcist traumatized her for life, meanwhile I find it laughable.
@robingoodfellow that is possibly due to an age factor. by the time YOU saw that, you had already seen far more shocking films, thus it was mild to you
i bet your cousin is older...
when Alien Came out the first? Grown adults Fled the theater in fright now most 12 year olds have seen it with no problem

the more we are exposed to extreme things,, the more inured we are to them

what is a movie that scared you? and how old were you at the time?
this subject fascinates me
@SatyrService background: I'm 58 and I'm a lifelong cinefile in general and fan of the horror film in particular, although my interest with horror films does not extend to most present day productions.
I love horror from the 1970s and I have an extensive collection on DVD and BluRay but I have never been able to figure out the appeal of The Exorcist on any level. Every few years I drag it out of my collection and try to convince myself it's the masterpiece everyone says it is and it gets worse with each viewing. When Linda Blair turns to Max Von Sydow and says "why don't you put your c**k up up her ass" all it needs is an Andrew Dice Clay "OH!" after it.
It doesn't draw me into the horror, it takes me out of it. Much like Freddie Krueger's bad stand up comic zingers take me out of the Nightmare on Elm Street films.
There are endless boring scenes of people standing around arguing over what's wrong with Linda Blair. And what exactly is Lee J Cobb's purpose in the movie? He keeps showing up accompanied by ominous music leading us to believe he's going to do SOMETHING. But all he ever does is bother Ellen Burstyn for autographs. And what's up with making her character a famous movie star? Wouldn't make more sense to make her more of The Woman Next Door type so we could more easily identify with her?
Why is Max Von Sydow played up as such an important character when he actually doesn't do anything? We get all this background on him and then he basically just shows up to die. Jason Miller's Father Karras is all we need. He's the most interesting thing in the whole movie.
I know I'm ranting 😅 but anytime anyone gets into The Exorcist it sets me off.

As far as what I think is scary, I've rarely ever been scared by a horror movie. But the BBC end of the world film Threads terrifies me.

Someone mentioned the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Yeah that's pretty unnerving to me. Invaders From Mars scared me as a kid because suddenly your parents aren't your parents anymore.
@robingoodfellow very nice and detailed,, i certainty take your points, careful critique

I recommend for both good and bad "the Critical Drinker" on youtube sound like just another "mook" but he is seriously thoughtful and informed in his critiques
lots of sci fi interests and is rather against recasting every thing to achieve diversity
he LIKE women heroes but requires them to be well heroic,, not just diverse
his recommendations tend to be good
hates what Disney has done to star wars, and most of the later Star Trek products..

threads! not seen that in an old dogs age@!
i think the exorcist scares the religious most of all.
and yeah some great actors doing schlock

anything current you like?
@SatyrService I'll check out The Critical Drinker. Sounds like something that would interest me, thanks.
Current- I liked Midsommar. Not scary to me, but a pretty solid folk horror a little reminiscent of The Wicker Man.
