The Invitation (2022) Review & Spoilers.
When I first seen the trailer for this movie, I thought that it'd have a similar plot to Ready or Not (2019). I didn't watch it in theaters because I thought that I'd be wasting my time. I've just finished watching it and it had me so shocked.
The movie's summary on Google made it seem like Evie's 2nd cousin family were either witches and wizards or a family cult, just like in Ready or Not. After the movie progresses, I stuck with the thought that Evie's 2nd cousin family were witches and wizards, a coven.
Starting from the beginning, Evie takes a DNA test to see if she had any family members, which she doubted. Then she got an email from her 2nd cousin whose from England; a white Englishman. I had to pause the movie to see where the bloodline falls in to. So I came up with the conclusion that Evie's mother is mixed (black and white), and that her grandmother is white and her grandfather is black. As the movie goes on, it turns out to be true. In the beginning of the movie, the woman who killed herself was Evie's grandmother, who looks like she's either in her mid-20's or early 30's.
Evie's 2nd cousin reached out to her and asked to meet up since he's going to NYC for business. They meet up at a fancy restaurant and chatted. He told her that she has other family members back in England, Evie told him that her mother had always wanted to take her to England. So, the 2nd cousin (I forgot his name real quick, so bare with me) offered to pay for her flight to England for their cousin's wedding. She accepted after being modest.
Once Evie gotten to England and to the mansion where her cousin's wedding is going to be at, she was taken in awe at how pretty and big the mansion is.
I really like how she accidentally bumped into one of the maids and the maid dropped drinking glasses on the ground and Evie helped her and another maid to pick up the glasses, introduced herself and made both of the maids' day.
Then there's the hot host, the man who owns the mansion (and is filthy rich) came along. My first impression of him that he's some kind of double-sided man. He took interest in Evie and soon Evie took interest in him.
The head Butler escorted Evie to her room. There was an elder woman standing outside her door and the head Butler told Evie that that woman is her person maid. She greeted the maid casually, putting smiies on both of their faces. As Evie walked in, she was wowed. Trust me, if I was ever to stay, let alone live in a bedroom in a mansion THAT nice, I'd be in wow myself. I felt how she felt, but can't relate.😂
Skipping to the little banquet part or something (I forgot exactly what it was. It was held outside and everything was gorgeous). There were two of Evie's cousin's bridesmaids, a tall, black haired woman who looks like she's bitchy, Viktoria, and a short, blonde woman, who, at first, I thought was mean just by her looks, Lucy.
My expression was totally wrong about Lucy. She's absolutely cute and genuine. She gave Evie a warm welcome while Viktoria was a bit cold.
Lucy has taken a liking to Evie, and vice versa. I called Lucy cute because she just seems so genuinely nice. She made me smile.
Later on that night, Viktoria saw Evie and the host, Walter, making out in Walter's private room, away from everyone. Scene cuts back to the little outside party and Viktoria made a remark about Walter and Evie to Walter, saying something about Evie needing to know something about him, and Walter scolds her. I thought Viktoria was jealous and thought that she's Walter's crazy ex.
After the party, Evie went to bed and suddenly woke up. She thought that she was seeing a ghost. Then all of these paranormal activities started happening. Evie scrambled out of her bed, knocking her lamp down, crawling under her bed. When I tell you that I thought that ghost was her grandmother, I tell you...
Then Walter literally yanked/grabbed Evie from under the bed, what seemed like he was manhandling her. I thought the ghost dragged her from under the bed, but it was a false alarm; just Walter.😂 I thought Evie died there for a sec.😂😂😂
After being scared for her life, she told Walter she saw something, he turned the light on to show her there's nothing and offered to stay by her side until she goes to sleep. They laid down in bed and Evie told Walter to talk to her so she can go to sleep. Nearing end of their night talk, Walter was telling Evie (who was now fast asleep) that he wanted someone who can accept the real him. Right there, I actually thought that he's a genuine man who isn't a nasty individual.
Morning or noon came and Viktoria and Lucy woke Evie up to go the spa. Spa. The mansion has their own. Private. Spa. These women out here fully naked with robes that looks so comfy to sleep in.
The spa looked like it was inside a well-kept cave. There were women with face masks on and they were getting their nails trimmed or whatever. The nail utensils are all gold. In the middle of the well-kept cave is a big pool (that, I think is a hot tub) with rose petals floating on the water. Viktoria took off her robe and swam in the pool fully naked. Both Lucy and Evie sat down at the table to get a manicure. They chatted away. Viktoria started to say some stuff, regarding Walter's past. She became real suspicious, so she kinda confirmed my suspicion about her being crazy over Walter. She seemed to want Evie to start asking questions about Walter's past. Evie told her that the past is supposed to be left in the past and there's no need to dig up skeletons, and that Walter doesn't have to tell her things that aren't important. Lucy told Evie that she had always wanted a sister, giving Evie a nervous glance. Then Evie said that she had always wanted a sister too and both Lucy and Evie smiled at each other. For that moment, I thought Lucy wanted Evie to be her sister, since the both of them have good chemistry already. I found that thought really wholesome.
Viktoria said sometbing that made Evie move her hand and the lady who was doing her manicure had accidentally cut Evie's finger. Evie got up and the lady apologized. Viktoria got out of the pool and walked up to Evie. She told Evie to let her see her finger and she put Evie's bloody finger in her mouth, which grossed Evie out and made her walk out the spa. Viktoria said, "Oh, you'll soon start to like me!"
At first, I thought Viktoria was into Evie and was not jealous because Walter took interest in Evie, but Walter "took" Evie from her.
Evie went back to the mansion where she began snooping through the library, where she was told by the head Butler that it was under construction. She found printed papers on a desk in that library. It was research about her. She stormed out and began packing her clothes. Walter came to her room where he saw her packing her clothes. He was confused and Evie showed him the printed papers she found on his desk in the library. They had a verbal fight. Then Walter made Evie listen, which calmed her down and they kissed, which escalated to them having sex.
After the sex, Walter told Evie to get ready for dinner for the bride and groom. She got ready. She was the last person to make it to the dinner. She wore a pretty red dress. She sat down next to Walter. He said a few words and everyone started eating. Evie asked Walter where the bride and groom are. He then smiled. I instantly thought, "Oh shit... SHE'S the bride, and HE'S the groom!"
Walter got up and announced the new addition to his wives and said that three is always better. Then, on his signal, three butlers including the head Butler, grabbed a punch bowl, grabbed a maid and sliced her throat, her blood pouring into the punch bowl.
My mouth fell open and Evie was scared. Then Viktoria and Lucy started laughing, as well as Walter. As they were laughing, they were showing their fangs. I went, "OH SHIT!" Then Walter started addressing Evie's family as mortals and he thanked them for scouting out Evie and bringing her to him.
I had to pause the movie because this dude, Walter, could have let Evie found out the more time they spend together, just like Stephen and Elena in The Vampire Diaries. Here's why:
Viktoria and Lucy are both vampires and are Walter's wives, and as long as he's alive, those two are alive.
Walter's forcing Evie to marry him, despite how scared as shit she is.
You know, maybe she wouldn't have tried to run away if he didn't dropped the bomb on her like that.
If I was her, yeah, I would have been scared, because a fucking person just died in front of my eyes. I know that if that happen to me, I wouldn't be able to eat because I would already feel full/lost my appetite. I would also become scared and asked if Walter, Viktoria or Lucy was going to kill me. They'd tell me no and I would've corporated. I'd be like, "Okay, I'm getting married at the age of 18. This seems pretty much like I'm getting eloped. To a man I've only just met three-four days ago."😂
To sum this up, Walter locked Evie up until the wedding, which was like in a day or later that night. Evie's personal maid rescued her and told her that a stake to their heart and fire will kill them. Evie asked why she was helping her and the maid told her that her grandmother and her were good friends.
Skipping to the wedding, Evie drank Walter's blood and needed to drink a human's blood in order to become a fully vampire. She drank Walter's blood and became a Halfling (half vampire, half human). Then she knocked down a row full of candles, everything catching fire. She drove a stake to Walter's heart, thinking she killed him. Walter began to age, Viktoria and Lucy by his side. Evie ran out.
Small fight broke out between Viktoria and Evie. Evie was about to die, then Lucy used her long vampire nails to scratch Viktoria on the back. They fought. Lucy took the lead and impaled of them on a sword of a statue, And they both died, turning to dust.
Head Butler tried to kill Evie, Evie won. Then Walter tried to kill Evie, the mansion is almost all engulfed in flames by now. Walter held her up by her neck, choking her. She used a barbed wire to slice his wrist clean off and kicked him into the raging fire. He died. Evie made it out alive.
I forgot to add, Viktoria married Walter 500 years ago, and Lucy married Walter 100 years ago.
When I tell you that this movie had me shook...
