That last episode of Primal I watched was incredible! 🤩
Episode five of the second season, "The Primal Theory." It completely breaks away from the story of the show's caveman and dinosaur duo, Spear and Claw, and takes place in 1890 London, England where Charles Darwin tries to explain his theory of evolution to his fellow scientists, among them is C.D. Darlington (Darwin was dead by 1890 and Darlington hadn't even been born yet, but whatever.) Darwin is ridiculed for suggesting humanity could ever regress back to their primitive roots if their survival depended on it. Just then, the scientists are interrupted when a constable arrives to inform them a dangerous inmate has escaped from the nearby asylum.
The men resume their meeting and hear a commotion upstairs, but dismiss it as the storm raging outside. The butler goes up to investigate and sure enough, he doesn't come back. The escaped inmate had broken into the house, murdered the butler and proceeds to attack the others. What follows is an intense fight for survival as the men desperately try defending themselves from the savage madman, their weapons becoming more primitive as the episode goes on. First they use guns, then blades, then fisticuffs, then a bow and arrow, before devolving into wildly swinging and stabbing with a sharp stick.
The scientists are picked off one by one, leaving only Darwin and Darlington, but the madman is overcome by Darlington entering a fit of primal rage with the aforementioned sharp stick, finishing him with a thrust through the madman's head. As Darwin and Darlington pick themselves up and gather their senses, Darwin rather humorously shouts "And there you have it!" having been vindicated on his primal theory from earlier, much to Darlington's horror.
That episode was a complete divergence from Spear and Claw's story, but I think that was my favorite episode of the show so far! Nothing short of brilliant, from connecting to the overarching story of show with Darwin's theory, to the build-up of when all hell breaks loose, to the intensity of the scientists and their desperate struggle against the madman. A masterpiece! And again, it doesn't even follow the main story of the show. Guess that's why it's all the more impressive, lol.
