In the movie, Godzilla is attacking Japan, even though it was established that he's a good guy in previous movies. Turns out he's doing so because the Japanese government has another Titan captive, and they are studying it. The only way King Kong wins is by grabbing his ax from his underground hollow Earth kingdom, with a blade made from one of Godzilla's radioactive scales.
