A bit of Guy Maddin's feature length debut

Tales from the Gimli Hospital, love how it begins with a deep bass horn blowing with the title card, and a 1920's styled dressed lady leaning over the title, the music!! He drew inspiration from Icelandic sagas, which are proverbially depressing AF, but what he gives us is a demented silly and fun kitschy fever dream. Be mindful however that there is some blackface, which I agree is unfortunate, but it's a part of cinema history, in the silent era it was common. The silent age is what Maddin seeks to emulate, in his own way. A student of cinema acknowledges what isn't acceptable, but doesn't use that as a reason to avoid cinema, the best will usually have elements that are unsavory, we are not watching movies just to agree with everything we see and hear, but experience a slice of life.
