Michael Haneke -- The Seventh Continent

Welcome to what I consider my #2 bleak film, it is absolute nihilism on film, the ending will be with me to my last day. And Haneke was just getting started here, this being his debut film.I find it more valuable than most of his other acclaimed films, as I really appreciate the despair in it, it feels more simple and airtight, a basic storyline of a family who are going to be finding their solution in a most shocking and final manner. The films of Haneke that I've seen that I think are better films are The Piano Teacher and Amour, Amour is the one I would suggest to those who are first and foremost into film as an art, but for raw hopelessness, his debut here is the place to be. Haneke specialized in these terrain, and one's personal taste in storytelling would perhaps steer you elsewhere, Cache is a classic, and a good place to start a Haneke retrospective.In a perfect world I could put his whole filmography here for us to enjoy and pause plenty to write down our observances etc.

My #1 bleak film btw is Roberto Rossellini's Germany Year Zero, that hits me harder than this one here, because in this we for the most part see restraint in these miserable people's lives, in Germany Year Zero the insanity inducing gloom and misery is noticeably effecting every moment of it's runtime where the characters are in noticeable unease and panic mode. A hectic pell mell sensation like being hunted down on the last night of your life.
