Lee Chang-dong’s follow-up to his acclaimed SECRET SUNSHINE is an exquisite story about the power of art to bear witness to both sublime beauty and the violent truths that lie hidden in the hearts of men. Korean cinema legend Yoon Jeong-hee delivers a stunning performance as Mija, an aging part-time maid and full-time guardian of her apathetic grandson (Lee Da-wit). Concerned by her frequent forgetfulness, she takes a poetry class at the local arts center to sharpen her mind. She begins to appreciate the wonders of the natural world, but a schoolgirl’s suicide initiates a chain of tragic events that will change her life forever.
The best in contemplative cinema for the last few decades has been from Asia, and I want something deep and slow, something with realistic people going through real things that are handled overall in a gentle and thoughtful way. I came close to getting the blu-ray once upon a time too for this,but now I shall see it by only coughing up 10.99 a month, which in CAD might be more like $25.
In the next 15 days I must see no less than 30 films, game on!!

I love outdoor scenes like this where foliage is off to the distance with a big fat road in the foreground.
