In regards to the Mabuse movies of the 60s, I‘d recommend a little german movie called „Suendige Grenze“, which translates to sinful border.
There arent many similarities in theme, but alot towards the overall mood of the time or the years before. Dont know if there is an english dub around, but maybe subtitles are.

@Somerset I might be getting that new Eureka set of Mabuse films, I've never seen them or Lang's 3rd installment. Thanks for the info on the lesser known gems, I hope Sinful Border gets an official release sometime!
